Fire investigators play a crucial role in analyzing the aftermath of fires to determine their cause and origin. However, the nature of their work exposes them to various health and safety risks that can impact their well-being. In order to address these risks, the "Fire Investigator Comprehensive Occupational (FICO) Health and Safety Assessment Study" has been initiated with funding from FEMA.

This three-year research project aims to collect valuable data on the health and safety of fire investigators in the United States. By enrolling and monitoring 200 fire investigators, the study utilizes qualitative methods and comprehensive occupational assessments to evaluate their risks in the field. The ultimate goal is to develop a robust framework that prioritizes the well-being of fire investigators and helps to shape future safety protocols. The website dedicated to this study serves as a platform for sharing updates and findings with a wide audience, including scientists, fire investigators, firefighters, and government officials. By disseminating crucial information through this portal, the study seeks to educate and inform its target audience on the importance of occupational health and safety in the field of fire investigation. Through the FICO Health and Safety Assessment Study, steps are being taken to enhance the overall well-being of fire investigators and to pave the way for a safer working environment in the future. This collaborative effort between researchers and practitioners underscores the importance of prioritizing the health and safety of those who dedicate their careers to investigating fires and ensuring the safety of their communities.
